Residential Load Disaggregation Project

Energy 350 was selected by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory on behalf of DOE Energy Information Administration to manage and install 16 non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) devices on 8 homes in Portland and the surrounding areas. Devices from three NILM manufacturers were installed and tested. Each home was also fit with circuit level power metering as a check against the load disaggregation software of the NILMs.

We installed all systems, as well as communication equipment for remote monitoring, gathering real-time data for residential energy usage. The circuit level power data for each home was used to validate the NILM load disaggregation software identification from small plug loads to large appliances and solar arrays with battery backup. This pilot study was conducted to determine the validity of load disaggregation technology in future energy studies.
